Within the First Order, Praetorian Guards perform the same task as Imperial Guards did earlier, within the First Galactic Empire established by Sheev Palpatine when he ended the Clone Wars with Order 66. They are therefore a direct legacy of this tradition of close guards around the ruling leader.

Praetorian Guards practice various martial arts with melee weapons and operate exclusively in pairs. The Praetorian Guard is composed of 4 pairs of warriors: 2 warriors armed with electro-bisento, 2 armed with electro-chain whip Bilari, 2 armed with Vibro voulge and finally, 2 (including the one presented here) armed with Vibro-arbir.
